The Christmas season is upon us and I wanted to share with you a few of my favourite essential oils and blends. So breathe deeply and let me take you on a sensory journey that can instantly soothe and enliven the mind and body.
Frankincense essential oil is considered a holy oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years and was one of the gifts given to Christ at his birth. Frankincense is mentioned in the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian scroll from approximately 1500 BCE, that documents its use. The ancient Egyptians used the oil found in the wild-crafted resin of Boswellia carteri trees in Kenya to promote younger, fresher looking skin.
I use this essential oil topically in my moisturizer as its astringent and cytophylactic qualities help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin imperfections such as discolouration. It stimulates the growth of new cells, and Frankincense also promotes faster healing when used on cuts.
In aromatherapy, Frankincense works as an expectorant to clear the nasal passageway, promote the relief of congestion, and encourage easy breathing, so I diffuse frankincense when someone in our home is full of congestion and stuffiness. I love its sweet, woodsy aroma which also enhances mood by diminishing feelings of stress and anxiety.
Lemon essential oil has a cheerful, sweet aroma that can freshen and fill your home with its clean, lemon-drop scent when diffused.
Originally from regions in Asia, the lemon tree wasn’t common in Europe until the 16th century. It is a part of the evergreen family and reaches a height of about 20 feet. From those trees, 75 lemons are required to make one 15-ml bottle of Lemon essential oil. This is accomplished by cold pressing the rinds of the lemons, producing an oil with the aroma of freshly picked fruit.
I use this oil as a laundry booster by adding a few drops to every load. We love the fresh smell in our clothes, and it helps to loosen grease and grime. I also apply it directly to a stubborn stain.
I use lemon oil to help remove adhesives, especially that sticky residue left behind from a mason jar label. I use a couple of drops, let it sit for 30 seconds and it wipes away instantly.
Thieves essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. Inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination to protect themselves, while they would sneak into graveyards to rob from the dead and dying.
I diffuse this blend almost daily in my home, and the clinic, especially during cold and flu season because it helps neutralize and purify the air.
I also use Thieves in my wellness roller balls, and last but certainly not least, I refresh carpets and rugs by sprinkling a mixture of Thieves and baking soda over them and vacuuming thoroughly.
Stress Away contains the unique stress-relieving combination of Lime and Cedarwood essential oils and is the perfect blend of tropical and citrus. This natural solution is uniquely relaxing and comforting, and was created to combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life, making it the perfect addition to my purse, car, and office.
This soothing fragrance also includes lavender to reduce mental rigidity and restore equilibrium. Featuring powerful plant constituents, such as the cedrol found in Cedarwood, Stress Away can help induce relaxation and reduce occasional nervous tension.
I use this essential oil blend in my diffuser to combat irritation and exhaustion throughout the day or to unwind before bed. I rub a few drops in my hands and smell it if I’m not near my diffuser. I also use Stress Away in my Be Happy roller balls, which helps boost mood.
Peppermint is originally from Europe, but 75 percent of the world’s supply is now grown in the US. One 15-ml bottle of Peppermint essential oil is created by steam distilling 1 pound of the leaves and flowering tops of the peppermint plant.
Peppermint is definitely one of the most popular essential oils, which, for me, provides a nostalgic, fresh aroma reminiscent of Christmas and candy canes!
I diffuse peppermint to create a stimulating, focused atmosphere for daily tasks, and apply it topically to sooth my muscles after a work out. I also use peppermint in many of my roller balls including Tummy Troubles and Seasonal Sniffles.
Christmas Spirit is my go to blend for the holidays! It’s a sweet, spicy blend of orange, cinnamon, and spruce essential oils, which really captures the essence of the holiday season. With Christmas Spirit on hand, I simply open a bottle and start diffusing!
These are a few of my favourite oils that I use on a daily and weekly basis. If you have any questions, please ask.
