The Christmas season is upon us and I wanted to share with you a few of my favourite essential oils and blends. So breathe deeply and let me take you on a sensory journey that can instantly soothe and enliven the mind and body.
Frankincense essential oil is considered a holy oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years and was one of the gifts given to Christ at his birth. Frankincense is mentioned in the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian scroll from approximately 1500 BCE, that documents its use. The ancient Egyptians used the oil found in the wild-crafted resin of Boswellia carteri trees in Kenya to promote younger, fresher looking skin.
I use this essential oil topically in my moisturizer as its astringent and cytophylactic qualities help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin imperfections such as discolouration. It stimulates the growth of new cells, and Frankincense also promotes faster healing when used on cuts.
In aromatherapy, Frankincense works as an expectorant to clear the nasal passageway, promote the relief of congestion, and encourage easy breathing, so I diffuse frankincense when someone in our home is full of congestion and stuffiness. I love its sweet, woodsy aroma which also enhances mood by diminishing feelings of stress and anxiety.
Lemon essential oil has a cheerful, sweet aroma that can freshen and fill your home with its clean, lemon-drop scent when diffused.
Originally from regions in Asia, the lemon tree wasn’t common in Europe until the 16th century. It is a part of the evergreen family and reaches a height of about 20 feet. From those trees, 75 lemons are required to make one 15-ml bottle of Lemon essential oil. This is accomplished by cold pressing the rinds of the lemons, producing an oil with the aroma of freshly picked fruit.
I use this oil as a laundry booster by adding a few drops to every load. We love the fresh smell in our clothes, and it helps to loosen grease and grime. I also apply it directly to a stubborn stain.
I use lemon oil to help remove adhesives, especially that sticky residue left behind from a mason jar label. I use a couple of drops, let it sit for 30 seconds and it wipes away instantly.
Thieves essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. Inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination to protect themselves, while they would sneak into graveyards to rob from the dead and dying.
I diffuse this blend almost daily in my home, and the clinic, especially during cold and flu season because it helps neutralize and purify the air.
I also use Thieves in my wellness roller balls, and last but certainly not least, I refresh carpets and rugs by sprinkling a mixture of Thieves and baking soda over them and vacuuming thoroughly.
Stress Away contains the unique stress-relieving combination of Lime and Cedarwood essential oils and is the perfect blend of tropical and citrus. This natural solution is uniquely relaxing and comforting, and was created to combat normal stresses that creep into everyday life, making it the perfect addition to my purse, car, and office.
This soothing fragrance also includes lavender to reduce mental rigidity and restore equilibrium. Featuring powerful plant constituents, such as the cedrol found in Cedarwood, Stress Away can help induce relaxation and reduce occasional nervous tension.
I use this essential oil blend in my diffuser to combat irritation and exhaustion throughout the day or to unwind before bed. I rub a few drops in my hands and smell it if I’m not near my diffuser. I also use Stress Away in my Be Happy roller balls, which helps boost mood.
Peppermint is originally from Europe, but 75 percent of the world’s supply is now grown in the US. One 15-ml bottle of Peppermint essential oil is created by steam distilling 1 pound of the leaves and flowering tops of the peppermint plant.
Peppermint is definitely one of the most popular essential oils, which, for me, provides a nostalgic, fresh aroma reminiscent of Christmas and candy canes!
I diffuse peppermint to create a stimulating, focused atmosphere for daily tasks, and apply it topically to sooth my muscles after a work out. I also use peppermint in many of my roller balls including Tummy Troubles and Seasonal Sniffles.
Christmas Spirit is my go to blend for the holidays! It’s a sweet, spicy blend of orange, cinnamon, and spruce essential oils, which really captures the essence of the holiday season. With Christmas Spirit on hand, I simply open a bottle and start diffusing!
These are a few of my favourite oils that I use on a daily and weekly basis. If you have any questions, please ask.

Digestion is critical, and ought to be the first system in our body we choose to support on our journey to bettering our health as 70-80% of the immune system lives in the digestive tract, commonly referred to as the ‘gut’.
Digestion is important for breaking down food into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth, and cell repair. Our food and drink are changed into smaller molecules of nutrients before the blood absorbs them and carries them to cells throughout the body. The body breaks down nutrients into protein, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins.
Poor nutrient absorption affects every system in the body. You could be eating a very healthy diet, but if your digestive system is not functioning optimally, those healthy nutrients could be lost in the digestion process.
Poor digestion can affect your entire body. Things like bad breath, body odor, acne, skin irritations, migraines, hormone imbalances, bloating, and heartburn can all be signs of improper digestion.
Select essential oils and nutritional supplements can help support healthy digestion and ease discomfort. Join myself and Dr. Megan Bernard later this month as we dive deeper into digestive health. Details below.

Have you stocked up on Thieves® yet?
With back to school just around the corner, that means the dreaded cold and flu season is too. Plan ahead, this is a product you want to get your hands on before cold and flu season hits.
The Thieves brand is becoming so well known that even people who don’t know a single thing about essential oils have heard about it. Many consumers say that “Thieves smells like Fall”. Plus, it is non-toxic and completely safe for the whole family, including pregnant mamas, babies and pets!
So, why is it important to clean with natural ingredients? Here are my top three reasons:
1. Safety: Conventional household cleaning products have warning labels - Flammable! Do Not Ingest! Keep Out Of Reach of Children! Many of these products are not tested for safety and contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can wreak havoc on your respiratory system, cellular health, thyroid, adrenal glands and even mental clarity. Kids, babies and pets are even more vulnerable to chemical exposure.
2. Air Quality: Did you know that indoor air quality is 5-7 times more polluted than outdoor air? Most cleaning products contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which have been associated with many health problems including damage to the liver, kidneys and the central nervous system. They have also been shown to harm the lungs and cause throat irritation and headaches. VOCs are released when products are used and can linger in the air long after we clean. When we breathe, we inhale the air, as well as whatever is in the air.
3. The Environment: Harsh chemicals found in our cleaning products are not only harmful to our bodies, but are huge contributors to environmental pollution. Many conventional household cleaning products contain ingredients that are toxic, non-biodegrade and from non-renewable resources such as petroleum, harming the earth’s ecosystems.
Thieves cleaning products contain a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils that fill any space with a rich, spicy aroma and the best part is that these oils naturally boost and support your immune system.
Remember, Health is your first wealth! So be prepared this fall to keep those germs at bay and stock up on your Thieves products.

Essential Oils are the most powerful part of the plant. They are highly concentrated and more powerful than dried herbs. Harvested from farm-grown and wildcrafted plants, herbs and trees, essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained by careful steam distillation, cold pressing and resin tapping.
Essential Oils are more than nice scents; these powerful plant extracts provide support for every system in the body: skeletal, muscular, circulatory, endocrine, hormones, respiratory and immune systems. There is virtually no limit to how essential oils can be used. They are used extensively for our emotions and brain support. An oil in a diffuser can soothe a child’s tough day at school and provide a calming effect when you’ve had a stressful day at work. Essential oils are useful, powerful allies in our quest for wellness.
I started using essential oils exactly one year ago and they have changed my life and my family’s wellness journey! So much so that I am currently working on my Aromatherapy Diploma from the Centre of Excellence in Manchester, England.
Our home is a sanctuary, and it is where total wellness begins. We use a line of non-toxic household products called Thieves, which combines the strength of Thieves essential oil blend with naturally derived, plant-based ingredients that is effective and safe around every member of my family, including children and pets.
Young Living also has a list of products and essential oils certified by Health Canada as Natural Health Products (NHPs) to aid in everyday conditions such as acne, coughs and colds, digestive health, eczema and dermatitis, headaches, joint and muscle pain, and stress. We all want natural remedies to help us with our health.
I believe that you and your family deserve products that are genuine, free of synthetic chemicals, and of unmatched purity. Young Living’s Seed to Seal® promise is both a promise to you, and a reflection of the company’s sense of global stewardship.
Gwen will be hosting a "Make & Take" workshop on Thursday July 25th at 6:30pm at the clinic where you'll learn how to craft an all natural After Sun Cooling Spray, great for the hot days to come. RSVP for this event is required!
